Chapter Seventeen

//Scene 1: Now freed from the eye of public scrutiny, Hero and Leo are back on the road! They plan on finding the real culprit and bringing them to justice no matter the cost, forming a true buddy-cop plot line for the second half of the adventure.\

“Buddy cop?” Samson laughed as he dismissed the prompt. “Those two wouldn’t be able to investigate who stole the last cookie from the jar if it was one of them who did it, and the culprit was covered in crumbs.”

“I can only assume you’re talking about Hero and Leo?”

Duchess Immaculate’s voice came from the doorway, and Samson looked up to find her standing there, a small smile on her face.

“Yeah.” Samson chuckled and turned away from his writing desk. “It sounds like they’re taking up the lead position on the investigation to figure out who kidnapped Stein.”

“It all sounds like a board game I used to play as a child.” Duchess Immaculate walked over and sat down on the corner of Samson’s bed. “You had to determine who the murderer was, what weapon they used, and…”

“What room they did it in?” Samson offered.

“No. What political advantage they gained by doing it.” Duchess Immaculate smiled. “It was fun! Anyway, are you worried about it?”

“Sorta.” Samson shrugged. “I mean, anytime Hero and Leo do something together, there’s trouble.”

“That’s fair.” Duchess Immaculate nodded. “Well, I was looking out my window and I saw them heading toward the School of Discipline. My best guess is that they’re heading down to Stein’s forge. If you wanted to tag along, we could go see what they’re up to.”

“Sounds like a wonderful plan to me.” Samson rose. Duchess Immaculate stood up as well, and the two of them slipped out into the hall and started walking down toward the ground far below. “Do you mind my asking if you came to me for a purpose? You look like you’d like to talk about something, if you don’t mind my saying so.”

“That’s fair.” Duchess Immaculate nodded with a small smile. “Yes, I actually did have something I wanted to talk to you about. I don’t know that it’s all that important, but…” She shrugged. “I just wanted to say that I’ve talked to my cousin about the army of Persmere, as well as my father, and I think we’ve all reached an understanding on it.”

“That’s good to hear.” Samson nodded. “Princess Perfect was telling me a little about it. Sounds like it’s been a state secret for some time now.”

“Indeed.” Duchess Immaculate agreed. “It actually originated… Well, I think you know it was put together about five hundred years ago. At the time, we actually bordered Asgarmere. From what it sounds like, about the time Persmere took up their non-aggression stance, Asgarmere was actively trying to invade our territories and wipe us from the map. When we more or less withdrew from the tournaments, they became angry, and assembled a small army on the banks of the river that forms our border.
